A drought breaking win in Top Comp eliminator and a hat-trick of personal best times has finally got the monkey off the back of Iluka drag racer Maurice Brennan. After a tormenting string of fruitless race meetings, the Boomeracing Team finally chased away their drag racing demons to post their first victory after two seasons of competition, with final opponent John Zappia red-lighting to hand over the win.
"Just to be in a final with John Zappia is a huge privilege, but to win is just awesome," said an elated Brennan, almost overcome with emotion.
Under the watchful eye of officials, Brennan spent the first part of Saturday’s racing proving he could safely transfer the car down the quarter mile, with a solid and straight 6.58 ticking all the boxes to move back into competition.
Fast forward to round one of eliminations, and Brennan was able to dispose of Andrew Minogue with a staggering personal best run of 6.44 at 213mph, much to the relief of the formerly unrewarded pit crew.
Team tuning advisor James Rowland was quietly ecstatic with the landmark run after a string of unsuccessful meetings.
"We’re so relieved to get the car down the track successfully. We softened up the rear suspension a bit and it seems to have worked," he told the huge Motorplex crowd directly after the first elimination.
With the stage set for an intimidating showdown with Top Doorslammer legend John Zappia, Brennan was forced to focus, and face the fight from the left lane with a .48 head start. But despite the pressure on Brennan, Zappia left the line five hundredths of a second before the green light, instantly handing Brennan the win, who charged on to post yet another personal best 6.41 at a blistering 220mph (354kmh).
Back at the startline, an elated Boomeracing Team punched the air in victory, signalling not just the win, but the end of a tough and somewhat humiliating season, and the relief of proving they have what it takes to be at the pointy end of the field.
"The whole crew have just been amazing and our sponsors have supported us beyond belief," said a jubilant Brennan surrounded by a new legion of fans.
