Willies Impresses at 2006 Season Opener

Sep 05

Stephen Willies made quite an impressive competition debut at last weekend's East Coast Nationals. Coming off a 9.29 @ 143 mph at the previous weekends test day, the decision was made to lower RPM from 6800 to 6500, until valve float and converter slip issues could be attended to. Stephen qualified in 46th position in the 92 car Super Sedan field, with @ 9.38 @ 141 mph coupled to a 1.299 short time. At his first competition outing, Stephen waded through 6 rounds of racing to reach the quarter finals and be 1 of only 5 left standing, before a -0.007 redlight ended his day against eventual winner Constantinou. Along the way this impressive rookie put together a package of 0.009 light and 9.458 on a 9.450 dial in. All this achieved with no electronics and leaving off idle! His worst light in the 6 rounds of racing was 0.114, with all other lights being better than 0.025.
